Darth Vader is teaching 8 students in The Galactic Empire about alchemy. In this lesson, they are studying substitutions and eliminations.
8 bottles have been set out containing the following reagents/compounds:
bromomethane
sodium methoxide solution
bromoethane
sodium t-butoxide solution
2-bromopropane
methanol
2-bromo-2-methylpropane
sodium cyanide dissolved in acetone
Events conspire against Darth Vader. He arrives late after fighting off Obi-Wan Kenobi and each student has already taken one bottle each. Even worse, the bottles were arranged in a particular order but were not labeled. He also lost his master seating chart and canât really remember anyoneâs name or where they sit. He has the following students in his lab:
Rey, Finn, Captain Phasma, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Maz Kanata, Kylo Ren
The boys are: Finn, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Kylo Ren
The seats (benches) are labeled 1 through 8 (1 and 8 are on the extreme ends and have only one neighbor each).
Darth Vader knows the following information:
The haloalkanes all have green caps. Reagents all have black caps.
Boys sit in seats 1 â 4.
Finn, Captain Phasma, Princess Leia, and Kylo Ren took bottles with black caps.
Students in even number seats all took bottles with green caps.
Darth Vader recognizes Han Solo who is sitting in seat 4.
Time is running short so not all reactions can be run and not all of the students are that efficient.
When students mix some of the haloalkane with a reagent, they will either get a substitution reaction (by evidence of a precipitate, presumably the salt of the leaving group) or an elimination reaction (by evidence of a color change) or no reaction (e.g., no ppt or color change). Darth Vader decides to let the lab run and will try to figure out who everyone is and where they are sitting. The students are to compile their data by yelling it out so all can hear.
The person in seat 6 yells out that they get no reaction with Kylo Renâs reagent.
Kylo Ren yells out that he gets a ppt with Rey, Luke Skywalker, and Han Soloâs compounds.
Princess Leia says that she only gets a reaction with Maz Kanataâs compound, a mixture of ppt and color change!
The person in seat 2 gets a ppt with Finnâs reagent and a color change with Captain Phasmaâs reagent.
Han Solo and Princess Leia are dating, and they sit next to each other.
Captain Phasma sits in between Rey and Maz Kanata.
Kylo Ren sits on the end.
The person at seat 8 yells out that they get ppt with both Finnâs and Captain Phasmaâs reagents.
At this point, the Resistance starts to attack the Death Star and they have just enough time to start up the hyperdrive and escape to Tatooine.
