Insert the syringe needle through the rubber septum of your reaction apparatus and add the solution to the magnesium turnings with gentle swirling. Do not allow the reaction to become too vigorous. Likewise, if the reaction appears to stop then applies some gentle heating and vigorous stirring until you have it going again. Once all the 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline reagent has been added, add 1-2 mL of dry THF to the vial as a rinse.Hydrolysis: transfer the reaction solution to a 125 or 250 mL beaker and slowly add about 3.0 mL of 5% HCl solution dropwise to quench the reaction and to convert the adduct to product.
