Grignard Synthesis of malachite GreenFind the theoretical yield for generation of Gringard reagent AND malachite green. Show calculationHere was the procudure: Weight out 200 mg of magnesium turnings and polish them thoroughly with the polishing cloth to expose fresh surface area. Quickly add them to the reaction flask along with 10 mL of THF and then clamp the round bottom to the condenser using Keck clamp. Dissolve 1.25 g of 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline in 5 mL of dry THF in a dry centrifuge tube (you may also flame dry this if it was not oven-dried by the TA). Using a clean, dry disposable syringe fitted with a metal needle, draw up approximately 2 mL of the 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline solution. Insert the syringe needle through the rubber septum of your reaction apparatus and add the solution to the magnesium turnings with gentle swirling. Do not allow the reaction to become too vigorous. Likewise, if the reaction appears to stop then applies some gentle heating and vigorous stirring until you have it going again. Once all the 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline reagent has been added, add 1-2 mL of dry THF to the vial as a rinse.Hydrolysis: transfer the reaction solution to a 125 or 250 mL beaker and slowly add about 3.0 mL of 5% HCl solution dropwise to quench the reaction and to convert the adduct to product.
