Molecular Weight Determination Methods
1. Calculate Mn, Mw and the polydispersity index for a hypothetical polymer sample that contains equimolar amounts of polymer having molecular weights of 25,000, 50,000, 75,000 and 100,000.
2. Change the words in problem 1 from equimolar amounts to equal weights and recalculate.
3. A 0.750 g sample of polyester was reacted with excess acetic anhydride (polyesters have carboxylic acid and alcohol and groups â and acetic anhydride will react with the terminal alcohol groups to make an ester with acetic acid as a byproduct). Titration of the reaction mixture required 11.45 ml of 0.0102 M KOH. What is Mn for this polymer sample?
