The very polar O-H and N-H bonds give molecules that contain these bonds a powerful attractive force for other molecules containing N and O. Scientists call this intermolecular attractive force the hydrogen bond. It is the explanation for why the tiny water molecular exists as a liquid at room temperature instead of the expected gaseous state (which is the case for many compounds larger than water). One water molecule hydrogen bonds to the next, and that one bonds to the next, and so on, so that the entire sample of liquid is a network of hydrogen bonds. Which organic chemistry functional group is present in a sample that has hydrogen bonding between the molecules?

ketone

alkane

ether

alcohol
