Polar Properties and Solubility:

There were three liquids (30-mL each) in the graduated cylinder. They were, in alphabetical order, dichloromethane, n-heptane, and water. The crystals placed in the spoon were iodine, I2(s).

Using this information:

H20 (18.0 g/mol; d=1.00 g/mL)

CH2Cl2 (84.9 g/mol; 1.37 g/mL)

C7H16 (100.2 g/mol; 0.684 g/mL)

a.) Sketch a 100-mL graduated cylinder and label where each of these liquids were located in the cylinder.

b.) Explain why the bottom layer and the top layer were purplish in color while the middle layer was colorless.
