Visible Spectrum of Hydrogen 410 656 nm 486 434 397 When a hydrogen gas absorbs energy, the electron can go from the ground state to an excited state. Then when an atom "cools off", the electron loses some of its energy in the form of light. The wavelength (energy) of this light will depend on which shell the electron leaves, and into which it falls. Some of the "light" will have wavelengths in the visible range. This light can be separated into its various wavelengths by a prism, producing what is called the "visible spectrum of hydrogen". A photograph of the spectrum shows this spectrum as lines, which are displayed along with their associated wavelengths (in nm) above.
