A steady-state process aims to create a stream that is rich in species B by refining a mixture of species A and B. The entire multi-unit process involves two distillation columns and a mixer and is described here: 75 kg/hr of a mixture of A and B (stream #1) which is 60 wt% A is fed to a distillation column. The overhead product from the column (stream #2) contains 20 wt% A and is fed to a mixer. The bottoms stream leaving the column (stream #3) is fed to a second distillation column. The overhead product of the second column (stream #4) contains 30 wt% A and is sent to the mixer to mix with the overhead product from the first column (stream #2). The bottoms stream from the second column (stream #5) contains 92 wt% A. The stream leaving the mixer (stream #6) contains 90% (by mass) of the B that is fed to the first column. Show all material balances used to perform the following analyses, and use the same stream numbering as in the process description. Mass flow rates should be indicated as m_#, where # is the stream number (i.e., m_1 = 75 kg/hr) and mass fractions should be indicated as x_#i, where i is the chemical species (i.e., x_1 A = 0.60). (a) Draw and label a flowchart for this process. (b) Determine the flow rate and composition of the stream leaving the mixer (stream #6) (c) Determine the flow rate and composition of the feed to the second distillation column (stream #3).
