1. For the following liquids: acetone, isopropanol, and n-burane a. Write the molecular formula b. Draw a Lewis structure for each compound c. Calculate the molecular weight of each compound. (Copy your work into your lab notebook for use during and after your lab experiment.) 2. The relative strength of the intermolecular forces depends on the size (i.e., MW), and structure of the molecules, and include in rough order of strength: ion-ion, ion-dipole, hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole (polar), dipole-induced dipole, and induced dipole- induced (dispersion) forces. The latter increases with molecular weight and can sometimes become the most predominant force. There are no ions in these liquids, and all the molecules are alike, leaving primarily hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, and dispersion forces to consider. List all the intermolecular forces in acetone. List all the intermolecular forces in isopropanol. List all the intermolecular forces in n-butane. 3. Based on your answers to questions 1 and 2 above, write a hypothesis regarding which liquid will have the highest ÎHvap , which will have the next highest, and so on until have established a ranking of all the liquids.
