1. Calculate mmol of propanoic acid (0.987 g/mL), benzaldehyde (1.044 g/mL), and pyrrole (0.967 g/mL) to be used in this experiment. 2. Calculate the volume of p-methoxybenzaldehyde (1.119 g/mL) and p-methylbenzaldehyde (1.019 g/mL) equal in mmol to the benzaldehyde in problem 1. *experimental procedure attached*
Part A: Miniscale Reaction of Benzaldehyde and Pyrrole Measure out 8.0 mL of propanoic acid and add to a 25-mL round-bottom flask contain- ing a spin bar. Attach a water-jacketed condenser and set up for reflux. Begin to warm the flask using a heat block or sand bath. Measure out 0.20 mL of benzaldehyde and add it to the heating liquid. Then measure out 0.13 mL of distilled pyrrole. Add it to the solution and reflux for 30 minutes. Cool the mixture and disassemble the apparatus. Further cool the mixture in an ice bath. Suction filter the cooled mixture using a ner funnel. Wash the colored solid with cold methanol (4 mL) and then with three 2-ml portions of cold water. (The odor of propanoic acid should be absent. If not, wash with two more portions of cold water.) Collect the solid on a Büchner funnel and air dry Weigh the dried product. Büch-
