Nucleophilic addition to a ketone or aldehyde. Nucleophiles can include cyanide, acetylides, Grignards, and phosphorous ylies (Wittig reaction). Condensation with amines and alcohols may be required to provide imine, enamine, acetal, hemiacetal. Acetals are frequently used as protecting groups.
