What by-product might have resulted if the dry ice had been exposed to moist laboratory air for 5 min before the Grignard reagent was poured over it? The procedure used was Preparation of Benzoic Acid by the Grignard Method using Mg turnings and bromobenzene in anhydrous ether. Once all the reactants are added and boiling stops, the flask is placed in a beaker with warm water for 5 min and then the Grignard reagent is poured over crushed dry ice (CO2) in a 250mL beaker, then stirred for several minutes.
