Background and context

Vestigial organs were those organs that had been functional in our ancestors but didn't have any function in our bodies. By analyzing vestigial organs, scientists suggest these structures as proof for evolution. Vestigial organs suggest that in evolution, existing organs or structures had been co-opted to serve new functions. The presence of an appendix in humans is an instance of a vestigial organ.
