PSY230H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Shyness, Twin Study, Acculturation
Document Summary
Twin studies suggest that variability in personality strongly influenced by genetic variation. Se effects small on personality between twins. Commonly defined in terms of shared beliefs, values and social practices of population: prevalence of ideas, values and social practices (no beliefs actually shared in modern society) Culture-centered approach tries to understand behaviours, thoughts, and feelings of people in one culture from within the culture: relates behaviours in that culture to beliefs in that culture. Variable-centered approach relies on comparisons of different cultures: requires that we have measures of important cultural differences between nations that can be used to predict/explain national differences in personality. The more cultures we have, the easier it becomes to eliminate cultural variables that explain differences between 2 cultures, but fail to explain differences between others (more is better) Hofstede used factor analysis to find broad dimensions of cultural differences: individualism- highly individualistic cultures either from commonwealth or northern.
