Commonly defined in terms of shared beliefs, values and social practices of population: prevalence of ideas, values and social practices (no beliefs actually shared in modern society) Culture-centered approach tries to understand behaviours, thoughts, and feelings of people in one culture from within the culture: relates behaviours in that culture to beliefs in that culture. Variable-centered approach relies on comparisons of different cultures: requires that we have measures of important cultural differences between nations that can be used to predict/explain national differences in personality. The more cultures we have, the easier it becomes to eliminate cultural variables that explain differences between 2 cultures, but fail to explain differences between others (more is better) Hofstede used factor analysis to find broad dimensions of cultural differences: individualism- highly individualistic cultures either from commonwealth or northern.
