Document Summary

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and the mind. Behaviour refers to the actions and responses we can directly observe. The mind refers to internal states and process, such as thoughts and feelings that cannot be seen directly and mist be inferred from observable, measurable responses. The scientific approach uses empirical evidence which is gained through experience and observation, and includes tinkering around with things and observing what happens. Scientific observations must be systematic meaning that they are performed according to a system of rules/conditions to ensure consistency/accuracy. Pseudoscience (astrology, graphology etc. ) is an inaccurate field that goes against the scientific method. All of the goals are linked to one another. Successful prediction and control are the best ways to truly understand the causes of behavior. Basic research is the quest of knowledge while applied research tries to solve a specific problem. Basic research tries to describe how people behave and why they behave that way.
