Document Summary

Allowing cheating gives way to more cheating. Successful cheating tempting for honest, hard-working students. Ultimately, about having a level playing field. Reusing your own work is still plagiarism. Desire to excel and get high grades (e. g. for grade school, good jobs) Stress, ignorance, laziness, apathy, lack of preparation and time management skills. Unaware of citation standards (20%), plagiarism (16%). Cheating (18%), time (10%), lack of confidence/self-worth. Not a few people that cheat a lot, rather, a lot of people who cheat just a little. Personal fudge factor how much we believe we can get away with cheating without changing our impression of ourselves. Experiment: by being a step away from cash (e. g. token not 8005) cheating doubled. In an exmperiment, when someone from an in-group" cheats, cheating seems more appropriate. Too much work (55% faculty don"t bother), don"t want to be seen as police. Too few university administrations back up their professors.
