The 25 million people of france were divided into 3 estates: the clergy, the nobility and the people. Owned 10% of france"s land poorly managed by unprofessional bishops and abbots who paid little attention. Once this land belonged to the church, it always belonged to the church. Hugh diversity in wealth, privilege and character. The lower clergy tended to be of peasant stock. The great clerics, were great aristocrats- relaxed in discipline, lavish lifestyle. 1st as aristocrats and 2nd in the church. There were clerics that were looked at in disgust. The granting of free gifts from the church to the government was really protection money. The church didn"t want their property to be taxed nothing short of protecting their privileges. However to the peasants, were very angry.
