Comm theory is systematic and thoughtful response by scholars to question posed via human interaction. Researchers want to discover how most people will react to something: aggregate data > generalizable findings. 5 levels of focus: who, what, to whom, channel, effect. Cultural imperialism- spreading western ideals to other areas. Rhetorical tradition: communication defined as artful public address, discourse- opposite sides talking, focuses on one speaker, practical/ functional, art/ skill. Semiotic tradition: communication defined as process of sharing meaning through signs, signs- anything that represents something for someone, we learn the meaning of signs, we assign meaning to many things, words are also symbols.
