Chapter 5: 4 kinds of cognitive abilities where there"s evidence of gender differences, memory. Women score higher but more similarities than differences. Females have greater verbal uency: naming objects that meet certain criteria. Males more likely to have language problems. Reading disability: poor reading skills that are not accounted for by the level of general intelligence: mathematics ability. Females receive higher grades in math courses but male get better in sat math section. Sat has high overall validity: measures what it"s supposed to measure: spatial ability : understanding, perceiving and manipulating shapes and gures. Participants asked to identify horizontal or vertical location. Mental rotation : ability to rotate 2/3 dimensional gures rapidly and accurately. Males respond faster than females: gender similarities, general intelligence: males show greater variability, complex cognitive tasks, genetic explanation for spatial ability. Recessive trait carried on x chromosome: lateralization.
