Document Summary

Objectives: - anatomy of blood vessels: describe the structure and function of arteries, veins and capillaries. Structure of blood vessel walls: arteries and veins- tunica intima, tunica media and tunica externa, capillaries- endothelium with sparse basal lamina. Tunics: tunica intima- endothelium lines the lumen of all vessels. Large veins also contain elastic fibers in this layer: vasa vasorum: system of tiny blood vessels found in larger vessels, function to nourish outermost external layer, explain how veins differ from arteries. Vasodilation is a widening of the lumen due to smooth muscle relaxation. Both are regulated by vasomotor nerve fibers of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system: describe the three types of capillaries and parts of the body that they are found. A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high: define hypotension, describe the factors that increase venous return.
