Highest risk for fetus when mother is infected or has reactivation of infection during pregnancy. 10% of affected newborns display serious symptoms (deafness, central nervous system damage, intellectual delay) Hiv virus that causes aids, can be passed directly from mother to fetus (crossing placenta) Fetus may contract virus in birth canal during delivery, or can be passed through breast milk. Lower chance of transmitting to fetus if: taking anti-hiv drug, have a d-section, and feed with formula. Infants who get hiv become ill in first 2 years, weakening their immune system. Other stds (syphilis, genital herpes, gonorrhea) cause congenital anomalies. Bacteria that causes syphilis is most harmful during last 26 weeks of prenatal development.
