Paralanguage: extralinguistic noises that accompany language (grunts, moans, pitch, pauses, etc. ) Proxemics: the study of how people structure the space around them when interacting with others. Kinesics: the study of body movements that accompany speech as a component of communication. When we invent new things we must come up with a new word for it. Great vowel shift -> vowels began to sound quite different. The come in contact with other languages and borrow words from one another. The more you have in common you have with another language the more likely you have something in common with another ancestor. English is considered to be part of the germanic family of languages - meaning at one point it came from the same population. More fiction that real science as we would need to have all languages around. The problem with this is that today there are more languages that are extinct than exist.
