In the previous lecture, we discussed the ideas of the preferential option for the poor and liberation theology. In solicitudo rei socialis, pope john paul ii discusses the issue of the widening gap between the rich and poor. His perspective was influenced by his own past where many of these problems were present, such as his experience of political division between the communist east and the capitalist west in poland. Another issue he addressed would be, the economical divide between the wealthy north and the impoverished south. Here, rather than reducing people to mere resources or a tool for capital, the dignity of the person should be considered. Many of his concerns called to those who had authority or power within the situation. Overall, there is an understanding that because there are many matters to address, it will be a long conversion. However, the option for the poor is the central idea that will influence this movement.
