Rule 1-1-must approach the text with an open mind. Rule 1-3- identify the conclusion and the premises. Rule 1-4 outline paraphrase or summarize the argument. Rule 1-5 evaluate the argument and formulate a tentative judgment about it. Rule 2-1 have a good understanding of different types of arguments. Rule 2-2 determine whether the argument is valid or strong. Rule 2-3 and whether the premises are true. The meaning of a statement it is either true or false: not both different statements. This concept is relativized to a person: a strong argument for person x is one that rationally compels person x to accept its conclusion that is, it is well formed and it has premises. All of which are reasonable for person x to accept. Furthermore in the case of a cogent argument the argument is not overturned by other statements reasonable for person x to accept.
