BIOLOGY 1M03 Lecture Notes - Decomposer, Species Richness, Autotroph
Document Summary
In figure 53. 9, where do you see the highest species richness: community 1, community 2, community 3, community 4, both community 2 and community 4. An ecosystem has four components: the abiotic environment: primary producers, consumers, decomposers. These components are linked by the movement of energy and nutrients. availability is the key constraint in aquatic ecosystems. As energy flows from producers to consumers and decomposers, much of it is lost. To analyze nutrient cycles, biologists focus on the nature of the reservoirs where elements reside and on how quickly elements move between reservoirs. Humans are causing large, global changes in the abiotic environment. The burning of fossil fuels has led to rapid global warming. Extensive fertilization is increasing productivity and causing pollution. An ecosystem consists of the multiple communities of organisms that live in an area and their chemical and physical (abiotic) environment. This chapter focuses on changes in the chemical and physical characteristics of the environment.
