Document Summary
Socb05 lecture 4 may 30 2013. We need a process to select participants/observations on which to carry out a study. Studying a whole population may be cumbersome/impossible: need a small group that approximates the population. Probability sample was born in the 1940s, and remains the most common for gaining large representative samples. Not always the best because some topics that are not suitable or appropriate: most common in social research, particularly quantitative, representative of larger population. Elements of a population stand equal chance of selection: more complex. Non-probability sampling: common in qualitative studies, vulnerable/hard to reach populations, may be unrepresentative. Elements of the population do not stand equal chance of selection: usually used in complex phenomenon that are not seeking generalizations, used on groups that are vulnerable, or hard to reach. People that there isn"t really a list of people fitting the category.
