Biology 2581B Lecture 7: "Tetrad Analysis"
Document Summary
Sequenced genomes are unhelpful when the gene of interest is among 20,000 other genes. Gene linkage becomes useful as it is the process of finding genes proximal to the gene of interest. An example of linkage is demonstrated in males who have haemophilia a that are often colorblind as the traits for this sex-linked mutation are inherited together. In contrast, individuals with haemophilia b do not necessarily inherited together (the responsible genes are far away from each other or on different chromsomes). Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker"s yeast) is a budding yeast important for studying the consequences of meiosis. In this species there are two haploid mating types (a and ), which fuse to form a diploid gamete. After meiosis is complete, the gametes form an ascus a membranous sac containing the spores which germinate to become the two haploid mating types and restart the meiotic cycle.
