Puberty: the period when a person makes the transition from being non-reproductive to being reproductive. Humans have internal fertilization, mating and courtship rituals, internal development within the uterus (which provides protection for the growing embryo) and we are sexually dimorphic. Human fetuses are exposed to sex hormones while in the uterus, but it is unclear how much influence these hormones have on behavior later in life. Gametes form a fertilized egg (zygote); the zygote begins to divide and becomes an embryo (0-8 weeks), then a fetus (8 weeks until birth) Sex organs consist of 3 sets of structures: gonads: the organs that produce gametes (eggs and sperm) The male gonads are testes, which produce sperm. The female gonads are ovaries, which produce eggs or ova. Internal genitalia consists of accessory glands and ducts that connect the gonads with the outside environment: external genitalia includes all external reproductive structures.
