ANTC09H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Malagasy People, Patrilineality
Document Summary
In this week"s readings the articles focused on matrilineal kinships and matrifocal families, where the mother takes the lead to implement decisions to protect and raise her children where the father plays a very minimal role. The article by schneider and gough identifies the differences between matrilineal and patrilineal kinship theories; schneider and gough also state that mothers have a stronger bond to their children compared to fathers (5, 1961). Stack"s article explains the strategies that women undertake in poor black urban communities to enhance their independence, obtain and maintain domestic authority as well as limit the role of husband and father while strengthening ties with kin (128, 1974). Stack also illustrates the important role of a black woman in the domestic structure (119, 1974). Furthermore, the three generation household theory described in stack"s article is one i can relate too, because i grew up in one.
