Plato the republic book 6 (summary 484a-502c) since philosophers have knowledge and superior virtue beyond the comprehension of ordinary citizens, they will know what is best for the city and its governance. All that we need to make our city possible, socrates concludes, is one such philosopher-king one person with the right nature who is educated in the right way and comes to grasp the forms. This, he believes, is not all that impossible. However the most important test for a philosopher king is the study of the form of the good in this, the learner gains the highest level of knowledge and thus becomes fit to be a philosopher king. Visible realm vs good is to the intelligible realm. 1) sun = source of light; therefore in the visible/tangible realm, the good is the source of the intelligible realm. 2) sun = responsible for sight (enables our eyes to see); similarly, the good gives us the capacity for knowledge.
