Romulus reigned for 38: 3rd gate is the janus gate. Gate should always be open except when there is no war anywhere: established chief gods and where they would be worshipped, animistic religion. Romans did not know what gods looked like. Zeu pater sky god: spirit more than anything. Spirit of the fire place: fire place vital to survival. God of the front door: protects house from burglars, father gives daughter to husband. Spirit of the whole household: and perhaps garden, spirit of ancestors, vesta. Tended by women known as the vestal virgins: 6 women chosen before puberty, 30 year service, most respected of women.
