Capillaries microscopic vessels where blood exchanges material with the icf: discovered by marcello malpighi. One-way flow of blood in the heart. The once thought of spirits that controlled the heart are now called hormones and cytokines. Removes cellular wastes and heat for excretion: plays an important role in cell-to-cell communication and defending the body against invaders. The cardiovascular system transports materials throughout the body. Primary function of this system is to transport materials from one place to another. Substances transported by cardiovascular system: nutrients, water, and gases enter body from external environment. Oxygen enters body at exchange surfaces in lungs. Nutrients enter in intestine across epithelium: materials that move from cell-to-cell within the body, wastes that the cells eliminate. Cv system also removes carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes: transports them to lungs and kidneys for excretion, some metabolic wastes are transported to the liver before excretion. Heat also circulates through blood: moving from core to surface where it dissipates.
