Only in universities around 1800"s in north america/ britain. Influenced by ideas by darwin: biological changes over time, organisms change physically over time. Societies are not static always changing. Also interested in having long term engagements with a society: anthropologists go out into the field for about a year, study them from within. Anthros are interested in how the past has changed people, affected them. Trying to learn the origins of their beliefs. How do things affect the way cultures work: war, globalization, colonialism, mass media. Interested in comparing different cultures to eachother: what do they have in common, what do they do different. How did they come to the way they are, what is different.
