White gay men as a block: deeply invested identity politics of white gay men that have obscured more radical agendas. It is an identity politics moreover that, like the identity of other white male scholarship, hides behind the banner of general interest or simply knowledge gay. If queer studies is to survive gay shame, and it will, we all need to move far beyond the limited scope of white gay male concerns and interests. You can have my brown body and eat it, too! I propose regarding the brown body as an axis in the formation of a cosmopolitan gay male identity and community this brown body mediates gay male shame: a distressing racialized division of labor resulted at gay shame. The queer establishment"s desires and identifications align not-so-queerly with those of u. s. nationalism: cosmopolitan: identify a subject position originating with a white, urban, leisure-class gay male whose desire is cast materiality onto the globe of the nineteenth century.
