Paper 1: deductive methods in communication ecology used as an introduction. *ecologists use a mix of the two in experiments. Paper 2: measurements of area and the (island) species area relationship: new direction for an old pattern main paper. This paper shows testing through induction- patterns, trends, data. 19 islands areas measured: before the island area was measure with flat measurements. 2-d image measure simple + easy but not very accurate. *according to the prof. this one works well enough: new technique is to get a 3-d measurement. Get a more accurate measurement but time consuming +complex data to interpret. Page 4 last paragraph gives a good summary of the concept.
