Lifestyle intervention program for obese children and their families (risk of diabetes) 2 yr pilot funded by lawson foundation. Develop, implement, and assess the effectiveness of a 4 week lifestyle intervention for obese children ages 10-12 at a risk for type 2 diabetes and their families. Increase physical activity behaviour during and following the intervention. Improve physiological and psychological outcomes as well as dietary patterns and self efficacy. Cost per family - including transport, family membership at ymca, field trips, t-shirts, Financial commitment: didn"t want a barrier but wanted parents to feel obligated since they paid. Group based educational sessions related to nutrition, physical activity, behaviour modification. Older campers pair up and help younger. Champ road trip across ontario team goal setting. Daily completion of passports with sections devoted to enhancing cohesion during program and social support after it ends. Buddy system for children and family members.
