Every roles has a set of responsibilities and expectations: when people deviate from their role, there are sanctions and punishments for that, we have certain expectations for people that are sick. When you adopt a sick role, your responsibilities and expectations change: it releases people from certain obligations, like going to work or school. Their associations with their normal role are now excused, they are seen as deserving sympathy because they are not responsible for their sickness: people cannot just simply claim that they"re ill, you need proof.
