Making the familiar seem strange in order to enhance our perception of the familiar. Mernissi makes this familiar thing (department store) seem strange through her outsider perception. This becomes strange through her eyes, so we can see and understand it better, rather than just accept it and not think about it. Trying to make the department store seem strange the way she sees it. Subtlety suggesting that eastern countries are not as bad as western countries for gender equality, and oppression of women that western culture suggests.
