The declaration of the rights of man and citizen. The king flees and is forced to return in 1791. Unhappy with the revolution, and wanted the king back. Civil war: uprising in the vendee, 1792-1796. September 1792, rumors that prisoners were preparing a coup to overturn the national. Sans culottes marched into prisons and killed many prisoners. Beginning of the radical phase of the revolution. Spread of popular democracy, rule of crowds. Took control of the assembly by the committee. 12 members were the leaders of france. Elected dictatorship, assembly had handed power to this small group of men. Anyone opposed, were arrested, tried and sent to the guillotine. Believed that the leaders of the government must be virtuous and serve only the interests of the people. Believed that government should lead and inspire virtue in people, provide a revolutionary education for all. By the end of 1794, 90,000 (?) were killed. Priests would become employees of the state.
