March 6th 2014: race, ethnicity & aboriginal policy. Rushmore: sturges south dakota, every year harley davidson shows new motorcycles. During his visit: deadwood, south dakota, crazy horse mountain, 1999 50th anniversary of its carving. Indians left the reserve and the government said the indians were hostile. Legend: crazy horse"s parents took his heart out and buried it at wounded knee. Aboriginal policy: pre-confederation, the relationship revolves around trade, fish, fur etc, on-going exploration by europeans. Indians are the military allies of these powers. Indians can only give up land to the british and only via treaty: middle of 19th century, indians are an obstacle to development, govt must take control of rupert"s land. 1869-70, ottawa govt decides to deal with indians with treaties. 1870, number treaties become a priority to the govt. 7 major treaties are signed for western canada. 1889-1921, 4 more treaties passed for northen canada.
