Document Summary

Theories of knowledge: epistemology: what we can know, how we know things, human knowing, doubt & certainty, knowledge * belief. Justification: perception & testimony, reason & faith. Theories of reality: metaphysics: nature of being, change vs identity, personal transformation & identity, the existence of god, nature of mind & body. What philosophy is not: not a religious doctrine no idea immune to critical scrutiny, good questions are as valuable as good answers, not the psych/soc of belief, philosophers want to justify beliefs not explain them. Explanation vs justification: explanation why they have the belief, doesn"t matter if true, justification provides reasons/evidence for people to believe a belief is true. Attempt to acquire knowledge about the nature of things (the essence) Philosophical questions (two types = in fact or what) We are all entitled to our own opinions: better: we all have our own opinion. Good exercise for our reason/imaginations: requires us to identify and examine our own assumptions.
