Document Summary

Today, psychoanalysis is bets thought of as a theory containing ideas variously inspired by freud but modified and advanced by others. There are conflicting opinions among psychologists with regards to the issue of motivated repression: some say the evidence for repression is overwhelming and obvious, others say the concept of repression has not been validated with experimental research. Elizabeth loftus discussed many cases of individuals who suddenly recover memories of important events: some of these turn out to be true, while others are false/inaccurate accounts which are later recanted (false memories) Ex: hypnosis is used to get patients to recall childhood experiences, but literature shows that hypnosis doesn"t improve memory and may actually be associated with increased memory distortion. Tendency to look only for evidence that confirms a previous hunch and not to look for evidence that might disconfirm their belief. They also readily acknowledge that information can get into our memories without our ever being aware of the information.
