Motion helps us understand events in our environment: Important to move through the environment and interpret what is going on. Motion attracts attention: attentional capture: ability of motion to attract attention; occurs when you are consciously looking for something, also while you are paying attention to something else. Movement perceptually organizes all elements of bird, so they are separate from background. When do we perceive motion: real motion: actual motion of an object perceiving a car driving by, a bug scurrying. Illusory motion: perception of motion when there actually is none: apparent motion: most famous; basis for motion we see in movies; observer perceives one stimulus moving back and forth smoothly between two locations. Each one sparks different area of the brain. Similarities between the perception of real and apparent motion, and between the brain mechanisms associated with these two types of motion, researchers study both types of motion together.
