Document Summary
Overview: human immune system made of lymphoid tissues + immune cells + chemicals (cell-cell communication thru cytokines & contact-dependent signals are important, immune system 3 major functions, recognize & remove abnormal self cells (ex. Cancer: removes dead/damaged cells & old rbc (ex. Scavenger cells like macrophage eat up these cells: protects body from disease-causing invaders/pathogens (ex. Immunogens trigger immune response & if it reacts w/ the product of response, it"s called antigens: immune system can fail due to: Fails to distinguish b/w self & non-self --> system can o attack own body"s normal cells --> autoimmune disease: overactive responses (ex. System creates a huge response to allergies: lack of responses (ex. Immunodeficiency diseases: some part of system fails to work properly) Pathogens of human body: bacteria vs virus, structure. Bacteria survive & reproduce outside of host if there is adequate food, Viruses uses host"s cell to replicate inside: susceptibility to drugs.
