In the 1800s & early 1900s, discourse is about men, and is associated with alcohol and drinking problems: early feminists often in favour of prohibition. Women did get a measure of support, especially a good woman (modest, good mother, not promiscuous, etc. ) During wwii, women entered the workforce and created a disruption of power. Women fought back, but they could not turn to the criminal justice system. Types of wife assault: physical, sexual, psychological/emotional, wears the victim down, seen as a primer for physical abuse. Taunting about inadequacies /putting her down/calling names. Intimidation: harms pets, rip up photos, hitting a wall, etc, a type of threat. *note: wife assault is a recurring cycle, not a single incident of violence.
