Document Summary
Lecture 28 - plant form & function: seed/root growth. Important evolutionary adaptation for life on land. Allows embryo to survive adverse environmental conditions: germination only when conditions for good seeding survival are met. Ex. overwintering: seed produced in fall when weather is nice, but winter will kill seedlings, seeds require an extended cold period to break enforced dormancy. Ex. drought: seeds germinating when only a small amount of moisture is present will soon die in the drying soil, larger amounts of water leach a chemical inhibitor from the seeds, permitting germination. Resumption of sam & ram activity: water. Need water for cell enlargements: oxygen. Balance btwn o2 & h2o required or seeds will drown: optimum temp for enzyme activity. Variable depending on the species & its evolutionary history. Root tip contains zone of cell division: has the initials (cells that are dividing, about 1mm (1000 microns) long, includes ram & its derivatives (products of division)
