oftenleavewithouther,andshewouldremarrying.Thiswasusedtoreinforcetheideaofwomen
beingloose.
In1865,anyclergy(includingcatholics,methodists)andgovernmentemployeescouldperform
marriages,registrationfeeisquicklydropped.
Abouthalfofthemenintheinteriorendedupininterracialmarriages.Othermenlivedingroups,
theydidn’tknowhowtocook,ordodomesticchores(astheywerewomen’sjobs).
Inthe19thcentury,homosexualitywasoftenunderstoodasdiscreteactsratherthananidentity.
Adjustingmarriagelawstogetridofhomosexualitywasasteptoofar,solutionwasto
encourageimmigrationwhitewomen.
In1860,amissionaryimmigrationsocietybrought60womenover.
