oftenleavewithouther,andshewouldremarrying.Thiswasusedtoreinforcetheideaofwomen

beingloose.



In1865,anyclergy(includingcatholics,methodists)andgovernmentemployeescouldperform

marriages,registrationfeeisquicklydropped.



Abouthalfofthemenintheinteriorendedupininterracialmarriages.Othermenlivedingroups,

theydidn’tknowhowtocook,ordodomesticchores(astheywerewomen’sjobs).



Inthe19thcentury,homosexualitywasoftenunderstoodasdiscreteactsratherthananidentity.



Adjustingmarriagelawstogetridofhomosexualitywasasteptoofar,solutionwasto

encourageimmigrationwhitewomen.



In1860,amissionaryimmigrationsocietybrought60womenover.
