Formal and legal membership in a political community. Roots = athens c. 400-500 bce: to be a citizen was to be part of a democracy. Demos/kratia = people rule: outsiders can"t be part of the demos, only athenians can have a voice, roman republic quickly became bigger than rome. First political scientist to think about it = aristotle: man is a political animal. Attributes = we live in communities; innate urge to live together and do things together. Distinguish us from animals: humans have the ability to carry on exchanges and order our political lives through speech: wrote and lectured on politics, ethics, biology and macro-sciences. Right to vote; right to stand for office: civic. Right to protest; right to freedom of press; freedom of expression: social. Universal available healthcare: right to enter the state.
