Document Summary

Brain virtually uses glucose: storage form of chemical energy. Put them in polymers, so it is a more efficient storage for sugar. E. g. glycogen polyglucose held in cell: source of c in synthesis of other molecules. Liver doesn"t want to lose the sugar, want to store it if you need it: structural elements in cells and tissues. E. g. cellulose in plants: components of nucleotides, nucleic acids, glycoproteins, and glycolipids. Simple sugars consist of one polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone. Considered hydrates of c: for each carbon, you get a water usually. E. g. glucose c6h12o6 most abundant monosaccharides: glucose is the most important fuel for many organisms. Monosaccharides: each c except one has oh group. Triosis 3 carbons: the exceptional c is either an aldehyde cho or a ketone c=o, glyceraldehydes, dihydroxyacetone. Simple sugars usually aldehydes or ketones and are 3-7 carbons in size. As a straight chain compounds: aldehyde at c1, aldose.
