Similar to structural-functional concept of four role types in family adult male and female, and child male and female. Without all four, family is felt to be incomplete. 7 to 8% choose childless, postponement of parenthood may lead eventually to decision of not having a child. Historically, family provided the only social security system; if it failed they depended on charity. Large families were necessary as many children died and someone needed to care for the aging parents/farm.
