BIO210Y5 Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
Cytology: the study of cellular structure and function. Cell biology: discipline which incorporates aspects of biology, chemistry, and physics. The human body contains two classes of cells: sex cells- (germ cells or reproductive cells) are either the sperm of males or the oocytes of females. Fusion of the two at fertilization is the first step in the creation of a new individual: somatic cells-include all the other cells in the human body. Extracellular fluid: all body fluids other than that contained within cells. Interstitial fluid: the fluid in the tissues that fills the spaces between the cells. Plasma membrane separates the cell contents, or cytoplasm from the extracellular fluid the cytoplasm can be divided into the 1) cytosol-a liquid and 2) intracellular structures collectively known as organelles. Plasma membrane: cell membrane or plasmalemma is the outer boundary of the cells. Although lipids form most of the surface area of the plasma membrane, they account for only 42% of its weight.
